Nearly everyone treats 5N1356 as "write about your placement". Then the criteria arrive and half the portfolio turns out to be documents produced before and after the placement โ a CV, a letter of application, a skills audit, a career plan, and a section on employment rights and equality legislation that catches almost everyone cold. It's the module that runs quietly alongside everything else and gets finished in a panic. We check your collection of work against every outcome before your assessor does.
Fill in details โ we reply within 10 minutes
Because it has no lectures to attend and no obvious deadline pressure until suddenly there is. It runs alongside your other components all year, quietly accumulating requirements, and most learners only open the brief properly in the final month. That's when they discover the portfolio wants a CV, a letter of application, a skills audit, a career plan, a section on employment legislation and reflections that deal with conflict โ none of which can be produced retrospectively from memory of a placement that ended six weeks ago.
Your collection of work carries most of the component, and it's a set of separate documents rather than one piece of writing. We check each required item is present, complete and doing the job the outcome asks of it.
One outcome asks you to summarise employer and employee rights and responsibilities โ health, safety and welfare, equality legislation, union representation, pay regulations. In a module called Work Experience, almost nobody sees it coming.
The specification names conflict, criticism and meeting new people as things to reflect on. Portfolios full of "everyone was lovely and I learned a lot" miss the outcome entirely, and it's the easiest fix on the whole component.
The skills audit and career plan are marked on specificity. "I would like to work in healthcare" is a wish. A named next qualification, a target setting and a date is a plan โ and that's what the criterion is looking for.
Placement portfolios routinely name the business, the supervisor and colleagues, sometimes with a real complaint attached. We flag anything identifying before it reaches an assessor โ this one protects your working relationships as much as your grade.
Most 5N1356 portfolios reach us with weeks left, not months. Priority review comes back in 24โ48 hours with the fix list ranked by what's still recoverable โ because some things genuinely can't be rebuilt once the placement is over.
Five patterns turn up in nearly every Work Experience portfolio that comes back for revision โ and every one of them is about the paperwork, not the placement.
Week-by-week accounts of what happened, and nothing else. A collection of work is a set of distinct pieces โ CV, application letter, skills audit, career plan, legislation summary, reflections. The diary is one item, not the whole thing.
Health and safety gets a line, equality legislation gets nothing, union representation and pay regulations don't appear at all. It's a full outcome and it's the one most often marked not evidenced on this component.
Every entry positive, every colleague helpful, every day useful. Assessors want the awkward handover, the criticism you didn't agree with, the first morning you didn't know where to stand โ and what you did about each.
A generic template CV and a letter addressed to no particular role. The outcome asks for job-finding documents aimed at your vocational area โ a real advertised position gives the assessor something to judge them against.
Supervisor sign-off, a workplace induction record, an observed task. Once the placement ends, some evidence is simply gone. This is the component where leaving it late costs marks that no amount of writing recovers.
Four of these five are fixable from your desk tonight. The fifth is why sending early matters more on 5N1356 than on any other component.
Get My 5N1356 Work Checked โSeven pieces your 5N1356 collection of work usually has to contain, and what each one is actually marked on. Providers word their briefs differently, so check yours against this list โ it is the fastest way to spot what you have not started yet.
Before placement
Work organisations in your field, career opportunities, and the key challenges and opportunities facing that area. Analyse means more than describe here โ an ageing workforce, a staffing shortage, a regulation change, and what each means for someone entering.
The unexpected one
Health, safety and welfare at work, equality legislation, union representation and regulations relating to pay โ for both employees and employers. A genuine outcome, and the one most learners under-write badly.
Before placement
An honest audit of what you can and can't do yet, turned into goals and action points for the placement. Written afterwards it reads as invented, and assessors can usually tell.
Job-finding
Real documents aimed at a real role in your vocational area. Marked on whether they'd actually work โ layout, relevance, tailoring โ not on whether the template looks tidy.
Placement admin
A statement of what you set out to learn, plus the paperwork around the placement itself โ agreement, induction, health and safety briefing. Small items that are easy to omit and easy to supply.
During and after
Workplace experiences, supervisor or mentor feedback on your performance, and challenges โ conflict, criticism, meeting new people, adapting to quality standards. Named explicitly in the specification, and routinely left out.
After placement
Options for future education, training and employment in light of what the placement actually taught you. The word "in light of" matters โ this section has to connect back to something specific that happened.
Send what you have with the brief. Every required item comes back marked present, incomplete or missing, with what each one still needs.
Most portfolios reach us late, so the whole process is built for that. Send whatever exists tonight, get it back tomorrow, ranked by what is still recoverable. No account, no payment until you see the price.
Portfolio, individual documents or the skills demonstration, plus the brief and criteria sheet. Half-finished is fine and far more useful than waiting.
A firm price and turnaround before you commit. One document or the whole collection, priced upfront either way.
Your portfolio goes to someone who reads 5N1356 briefs regularly and knows your vocational area โ healthcare, childcare, business or trades.
Each required item marked present, incomplete or missing. Every outcome mapped. Legislation checked, reflections tested, employer details anonymised, sources verified.
A fix list ranked by weighting and by what is still gatherable, and you make every change. Follow-up questions cost nothing.
Work Experience is taken across almost every vocational area, and a career plan for a healthcare assistant is judged differently from one for an IT technician. So your portfolio goes to someone who knows your sector โ and who has marked enough 5N1356 briefs to spot the outcome you think you've covered but haven't.
"A career plan that says 'work in healthcare' is a wish. Name the qualification, the setting and the year and it's a plan."
"The rights and responsibilities outcome is a full section, not a sentence about hand hygiene. That one alone moves grades."
"Get your supervisor's sign-off before the placement ends. After that it's a phone call you'll be dreading for weeks."
"Childcare learners need far more placement hours than the default. Check your programme descriptor, not the module page."
Check these six against your own paperwork before you plan anything. Placement hours vary by vocational area more than any other figure here โ your programme descriptor decides it, not the module page, and getting that wrong is what makes learners defer.
Health and safety, equality, unions, pay, employer duties and your sources โ six areas one outcome expects you to cover. Most learners give the lot a single paragraph, which makes this the fastest grade gain on the component. The employment rights check comes free with every order.
| The area | What weak coverage looks like | What earns the mark |
|---|---|---|
| Health, safety and welfare | "The workplace was safe and we wore PPE" | The employer's duties, your duties, and how they showed up in your placement |
| Equality legislation | Not mentioned at all โ the commonest gap | The protected grounds and one situation where it applied in practice |
| Union representation | "There was no union so it doesn't apply" | The right to representation itself, and how it works where it exists |
| Pay regulations | Skipped because the placement was unpaid | Minimum pay, payslips, hours and breaks โ still an outcome regardless |
| Employer responsibilities | Only your own duties written up | Both sides. The outcome names employers and employees |
| Sources | A general web page with no date | Irish workplace guidance, cited properly and current |
Employee rights and employer duties. Portfolios that cover only one half get marked partly met, however good the writing is.
Irish workplace and equality guidance rather than general international material. Assessors notice immediately when it isn't.
One instance from your placement for each area. A list of legislation evidences knowledge; an example evidences understanding.
Unpaid placement, no union, small employer โ the outcome still asks. Write what the right is and why it exists.
Whatever safety briefing or policy you were given on day one is free evidence sitting in your paperwork already.
Describe the policy, not the company. Naming a business alongside a criticism is the risk we flag most on this component.
Work Experience appears in almost every Level 5 major award in Ireland, which is why it's one of the most widely taken components in the whole framework โ and why its requirements differ so much between learners.
The most common route we see. Your placement is usually your own workplace, which makes the hours easy and the reflection harder โ familiar settings produce fewer "I didn't know where to stand" moments to write about.
The route with the heaviest placement requirement by a distance. Early learning programmes typically demand far more hours than the Level 5 default, across more than one setting and more than one age band.
Where the career plan and job-finding documents carry the most weight, because the vocational area is broad and the assessor wants to see you've narrowed it to something real.
Taken on its own by people returning to work, changing direction or building credits toward a major award later. A valid Level 5 qualification in its own right.
The single most useful list on this page. These items cannot be produced afterwards, and losing them is the one 5N1356 problem no reviewer can fix.
5N1356 rarely arrives alone. These are the components learners most often send alongside it.
Five checks aimed at exactly how Work Experience marks disappear. They come with every order, whatever you send โ no premium tier, nothing charged as an add-on.

One learner who completed a full placement, wrote thirty pages, and was still missing half the collection of work.
K.D. completed a twelve-week placement and wrote up every week of it in detail โ around thirty pages of careful, honest account. Her portfolio came back referred and the feedback said "incomplete collection of work", which she read as meaning she hadn't written enough. She had written far more than most of her class.
She had produced one item extremely well and five items not at all. There was no skills audit, no career plan, no letter of application, and the rights and responsibilities outcome had two sentences about hand hygiene. Her CV existed but was a generic template aimed at no particular role. Every reflection was positive, so the outcome naming conflict and criticism had nothing to attach to. And she'd named the pharmacy and her supervisor throughout.
She produced the four missing documents in a weekend, expanded the rights section, and reworked three reflections around real difficulties. Merit on resubmission. โ
Merit on resubmission. Nothing new had to be gathered from the placement โ the material was all already in her diary.
Four anonymised snapshots of the finding, the fix and the movement โ across the portfolio and the skills demonstration.
What the review found:Every colleague helpful, every day useful, every task enjoyable. The specification names conflict, criticism and meeting new people, and none of them appeared anywhere.
The fix supplied:Three difficult moments already mentioned in passing in his own entries, with the structure to expand each into proper reflection.
Indicative band:Pass to Merit on the reflection outcomes, with no new experiences needed.
What the review found:A tidy template CV and a letter with no role, no employer and no connection to her vocational area โ so the assessor had nothing to judge relevance against.
The fix supplied:Instructions to pick one real advertised post in her sector and target both documents at it, with the four points from her placement worth foregrounding.
Indicative band:Partly met to met, and the documents became usable in real life too.
What the review found:The business, the branch and the supervisor named throughout, including in a passage describing a staffing decision the learner disagreed with.
The fix supplied:Anonymised replacements that kept the evidence intact, and a note on which passage to rework before it reached anyone.
Indicative band:No grade change โ but a real problem removed before submission.
Judge it yourself. These are Work Experience learners across several vocational areas, saying what changed after an audit. Names shortened at their request โ more on our reviews page.
"I wrote thirty pages about my placement and still got 'incomplete collection of work'. Turned out I'd done one item brilliantly and five not at all. Nobody explains that it's a set of documents."
"There's a whole section on employment law in a work experience module. I'd written two lines about PPE. Got a proper structure back and it moved the whole thing a band."
"All my reflections said everyone was lovely. Apparently the brief wants the conflict and the criticism too. They found three hard moments I'd mentioned in one line each and never developed."
"Best advice I got was to chase my supervisor's sign-off before the placement finished. Two people in my class are still trying to get theirs months later."
"I'd named the shop and my manager on nearly every page, including where I said the rota was unfair. Very glad that got picked up before it was handed in."
"Doing childcare and my placement hours were way higher than the module page said. Got told to check the programme descriptor instead. Would have been short by forty hours otherwise."

Work Experience is judged against your vocational area, so the same portfolio reads differently depending on where you were placed. These are the sectors most 5N1356 work reaches us from.
Usually your own workplace, which makes hours and sign-off easy. The catch is reflection โ familiar settings produce fewer genuinely uncomfortable moments, so learners here most often have thin reflective sections.
The heaviest placement requirement of any route, often across two settings and two age bands in Tusla-registered services. Check your programme descriptor early โ the module page understates it badly.
Strongest for the job-finding documents and vocational area analysis, since sector data is easy to find. Weakest for the supervisory element, which office placements often don't naturally provide.
Excellent material for the challenges and opportunities outcome, because the sector changes fast and there's plenty to analyse. Employment rights sections here are often the thinnest we see.
Rich reflection material โ busy shifts, difficult customers, real pressure โ and usually a genuine supervisory element to evidence. The career plan is where these portfolios most often stay vague.
ETB, PLC college, private provider or online โ 5N1356 is assessed against the same component specification everywhere in Ireland.
