Qqi Skills Demonstration Help

Every other assessment on your award can be rewritten. This one happens once, on a date somebody else set โ€” and on most components it carries the single largest weighting. The other thing nobody explains: a large share of the marks are not in the doing at all. They sit in the plan you wrote beforehand and the account you write afterwards, both of which we can check while there is still time to change them.

  • Your plan, script or write-up read before the demonstration date
  • Every task mapped to the outcome it is supposed to evidence
  • Supervisor and assessor reports cross-checked against your account
  • Recording requirements flagged early, not on submission day
  • Clients, children, colleagues and settings checked for anonymity
  • Returned ready for you to finalise โ€” you make every edit yourself

Why a QQI Skills Demonstration Is the Assessment You Cannot Redraft

Because it is the only one with a date on it that somebody else chose. An assignment can be rewritten the night before. A learner record can be reshaped in a weekend. A demonstration is observed, or recorded, or performed in front of a group โ€” once โ€” and after that the evidence is whatever happened. That is also why the preparation carries so much weight: the plan you write beforehand and the account you write afterwards are both assessed, and both are entirely fixable while there is still time.

โœ๏ธ Most of the Marks Are Written

Learners prepare for the doing and forget the writing. On most components the demonstration comes with a plan, a rationale and a reflective account โ€” and that written evidence is where the criteria actually get met.

๐ŸŽฏ Tasks Counted, Outcomes Missed

You complete every required task and an outcome still has nothing against it, because two tasks proved the same thing. We map tasks to outcomes and show you the gap while there is still a task left to change.

๐Ÿ‘ฅ Someone Else Marks Part of It

A supervisor or assessor often rates your observed practice separately from your written account. The two have to describe the same person doing the same thing โ€” assessors read both, and a mismatch damages each.

๐ŸŽฅ Recording Rules Catch People Out

Self-recorded demonstrations come with conditions โ€” length, whether an audience is required, whether edits are allowed. Learners discover these on submission day. We flag them while a reshoot is still possible.

๐Ÿ”’ A Recording Is a Document Forever

Whatever appears in shot becomes part of your evidence โ€” a name on a whiteboard, a chart on a wall, a colleague walking past. Anonymity matters more here than anywhere, because video cannot be quietly edited later.

โฑ Turnaround Built Around Fixed Dates

Demonstration dates do not move for anybody. Tell us yours when you send and it goes ahead of everything else โ€” a plan sent Monday comes back before a Thursday slot.

Common Challenges

5 QQI Skills Demonstration Mistakes That Drop Your Grade

These five patterns turn up across every component and every level. Four of them happen on paper, before or after the day itself, which means they can still be caught and corrected โ€” the fifth just needs knowing about while your date is still ahead of you.

Preparing to Do It, Not to Write It

Hours rehearsing the task and no thought given to the plan, rationale or reflective account that accompany it. On most components that written evidence carries more criteria than the performance does.

Four Tasks Proving Two Things

Every required task completed, two outcomes evidenced twice over, and two outcomes with nothing at all. Learners count tasks; assessors count outcomes. Fifteen minutes of mapping prevents it entirely.

A Reflection Where Nothing Went Wrong

"It went well and the client was happy." Assessors want the moment you adjusted, the thing you would do differently, the bit that did not go to plan. A flawless account evidences less than an honest one.

Your Account and Their Report Disagree

You describe leading the task; the supervisor's report describes assisting. Neither is dishonest โ€” you simply wrote them separately, weeks apart. The assessor reads both side by side and notices.

A Recording That Breaks the Rules

Too long, edited when it should be one take, no audience where one was required, or a name visible on a wall behind you. Found on submission day, when there is no time left to record it again.

Recognise Any of These?

Four are fixable at your desk. The fifth only needs knowing about before your date, which is the whole argument for sending early.

What It Actually Involves

QQI Skills Demonstration Format Explained: All 7 Parts, Plan to Write-Up

Nobody explains the format, so here it is. QQI defines a skills demonstration simply โ€” a task or series of tasks that demonstrate a range of skills. In practice that means seven parts, from the plan you write beforehand to the account you write afterwards, and most learners prepare for only one of them.

Before ยท assessed

The Plan and Rationale

What you intend to do, why that task, what you expect to happen and what could go wrong. Written in advance and marked. Learners who plan in their head and write nothing lose these criteria outright.

The day itself

The Task, or Series of Tasks

Rarely one thing. Usually several tasks, each claiming particular outcomes, sometimes split between a knowledge element and a practical one. The count and format come from your brief, not from a classmate.

Not your words

The Observer's Report

A supervisor, mentor or assessor rating what they saw. On some components this is a separate weighted element. Ask early who is completing it and what they need from you, because chasing it afterwards is painful.

After ยท heavily assessed

Your Written Account

What you did, why you did it that way, what you noticed and what you would change. This is where most of the criteria are actually met, and it is the part learners write in a rush the night before.

The audit

Outcome Coverage Across Tasks

Every outcome the demonstration is meant to evidence, matched to the task that evidences it. Duplication in one place always means a gap in another, and this is the check that finds it.

If recorded

Recording Conditions

Length, whether editing is allowed, whether an audience must be visible, sound quality, and consent from anyone in shot. Provider rules differ and they are not negotiable on the day.

Throughout

Anonymity and Consent

Real people appear in a demonstration โ€” a resident, a child, a colleague, a client. Names, faces, charts, whiteboards and door signs all count as identifying, and a recording keeps them permanently.

Send the plan tonight and it comes back tomorrow, with anything date-dependent flagged at the top of the list. Tell us your assessment date and it moves ahead of everything else in the queue. No account to create, and no payment until you have seen the price.

1

Send What Exists

The brief, your plan, a script or the write-up afterwards. Earlier is far more useful here than complete โ€” before the date beats after it every time.

2

Quote in 10 Minutes

A fixed price and a return time, sent before you commit to anything. Tell us your demonstration date and we work backwards from it.

3

Matched to Your Sector

A care demonstration and a business presentation are judged against different expectations. Your work goes to someone who has read that kind of brief before.

4

Plan, Coverage and Write-Up Audit

Tasks mapped to outcomes, the plan checked for what it is missing, your account tested for reflection, the observer's report cross-checked, recording rules confirmed, anonymity flagged.

5

You Rewrite, We Answer

A fix list with anything date-dependent at the top, because that is the part with a deadline you cannot move. Follow-up questions cost nothing.

QQI Skills Demonstration Write-Up Guide: 6 Steps to Secure Your Marks

The task is over; the marks are not. Six things your written account has to do, each shown weak and strong in the table below, then six habits that make writing it easier. Every one of them is fixable at your kitchen table, long after the demonstration itself has finished.

ElementWhat weak looks likeWhat earns the mark
The task"I assisted a client with personal care."What the task was, in what setting, with what constraints on the day
Why that wayNot mentioned at allThe approach you chose and the one you rejected, with a reason
Preparation"I got everything ready."What you checked, what you set up, what you would have done if it were missing
The personA name, or nothing about themTheir preference or need shaping what you did, anonymised
What shifted"It went well."The moment something changed and how you adjusted mid-task
Next time"I would do the same."One specific thing you would change, and why
1

Write It the Same Day

The detail that earns marks is gone within a week. Ten minutes of notes straight afterwards is worth more than an hour a month later.

2

Name the Outcome

Label each task with the outcome it evidences. It forces you to check coverage and it makes the assessor's job easy.

3

Include the Wobble

The moment it did not go to plan is the strongest evidence you have, because it shows judgement rather than routine.

4

Match the Observer

Read the supervisor's report before finalising your account. If they wrote "assisted" and you wrote "led", one of you needs to be right.

5

Check the Room, Not Just the Script

For recorded demos, whatever is in shot is in your evidence permanently. Whiteboards, charts, door signs, passing colleagues.

6

Send the Plan, Not the Panic

A plan checked a fortnight early costs less and changes more than a write-up checked the night before submission.

By Component

Which Component Are You Demonstrating For? Every QQI Route Covered

The technique is the same everywhere; the weighting, the format and the expectations are not. Find yours below and follow the link for the component-specific detail.

Care and Healthcare Demonstrations

Usually the heaviest weighting you will meet โ€” commonly 60% โ€” and almost always workplace-observed. Personal care, manual handling, activity planning and infection control are the recurring task types.

Special Needs Assisting Demonstrations

The setting where role boundaries matter most. Assessors are checking that you worked under direction and that the person's autonomy was preserved โ€” wording that puts you outside the role costs marks even when the practice was correct.

  • 5N1786 โ€” demo typically 60%
  • 6N1957 at Level 6 โ€” typically 50%
  • Highest anonymity risk of any sector
  • Autonomy evidence is what lifts the band
  • Supervisor assessment often weighted separately

Presentation and Interview Demonstrations

Live, in front of people, and marked on listed behaviours rather than confidence โ€” signposting, making a case, evidence, timing and handling the questions. Almost all of it can be fixed on paper first.

  • Communications 5N0690 โ€” demo typically 50%
  • Group discussion and Q&A both assessed
  • Argue a position; a neutral overview will not meet it
  • Frequently self-recorded on online courses
  • Strong support for second-language learners

Early Years and Childcare Demonstrations

Activity planning, implementation and evaluation, observed in a Tusla-registered setting. The planning and the evaluation carry more marks than running the activity does.

  • Planned activity with framework links
  • Evaluation is where the band is decided
  • Children must not be identifiable, ever
  • Consent needed before any recording
  • See childcare and early learning help

Work Experience and Business Demonstrations

Usually lighter weighted at around 40%, and often the element learners leave until the placement is nearly over โ€” which is exactly when the observer sign-off becomes hardest to obtain.

The Other Half of Your Component

A demonstration is always paired with something. Whatever that second element is, its evidence has to be written for its own outcomes rather than borrowed from the demo.

Case Study

Four Tasks Done, Two Outcomes Empty โ€” One Skills Demonstration Rescued

A learner who had completed every required task correctly and would still have been referred, caught eleven days before her final submission.

Skills demonstration โ€” care setting, four tasks

Learner: W.O.QQI Level 5Residential care, Kilkenny

Where she started

W.O. had done everything her brief asked. Four observed tasks, all completed competently, supervisor report signed, and a short write-up finished. She sent it as a formality, expecting confirmation that she was done.

What the review found

Two of her four tasks evidenced the same two outcomes, leaving two outcomes with nothing against them โ€” she would have been referred on coverage despite flawless practice. Her write-up described what happened and never said why she chose those approaches. And her supervisor's report said she had assisted with a transfer that her own account described her as leading.

Where it landed

She arranged one extra task covering both gaps, added the reasoning to her write-up, and clarified the transfer with her supervisor. Merit, submitted on time. โœ…

How the reviewer worked through it

  • 1Built a task-to-outcome table and showed the two outcomes carrying no evidence at all
  • 2Identified one task she could realistically arrange that would cover both gaps at once
  • 3Marked six places in her write-up where a reason belonged after a description
  • 4Flagged the mismatch between her account and the supervisor's wording before an assessor found it
  • 5Found a resident's first name on a care chart visible in one attached photograph

โœ… Final Outcome

Merit on first submission. Every original task kept โ€” one added, and about 400 words rewritten.

QQI Skills Demonstration Audits: 4 Real Findings, Fixes and Band Moves

Every order comes back as a marked-up copy, a task-to-outcome table and a ranked fix list with date-dependent items at the top. These four anonymised examples show exactly that: what was found, what was sent back, and where the band moved. Two of the four were heading for a referral.

Coverage ยท Tasks

Every Task Done, Two Outcomes Empty

๐Ÿ“˜ Four observed tasks, care setting

What the review found:All required tasks completed competently, with two of them evidencing the same pair of outcomes and two outcomes carrying nothing at all.

The fix supplied:A task-to-outcome table plus one realistic extra task that closed both gaps together, arranged with eleven days to spare.

Indicative band:A likely referral turned into a Merit, with no existing task discarded.

Write-Up ยท Reasoning

What Happened, Never Why

๐Ÿ“˜ Written account after the demonstration

What the review found:An accurate, orderly description of each step with no explanation anywhere of why that approach was chosen over another โ€” so the judgement criteria had nothing to assess.

The fix supplied:Six marked points where a single sentence of reasoning belonged, each drawn from a decision he had already made on the day.

Indicative band:Pass to Merit from roughly 200 added words.

Observer ยท Mismatch

She Led It; Her Supervisor Wrote "Assisted"

Recording ยท Rules

Edited When One Take Was Required

๐Ÿ“˜ Self-recorded demonstration

What the review found:A polished, well-cut recording assembled from three attempts, submitted to a brief that specified a single unedited take with a visible audience.

The fix supplied:The requirement flagged nine days before the deadline, with a shot list so the reshoot took one afternoon rather than a week.

Indicative band:A rejected submission avoided entirely.

QQI Skills Demonstration Help Wherever You're Assessed

Where you are observed changes what is easy and what is risky. These are the settings most demonstration evidence reaches us from.

๐Ÿฅ Nursing Homes and Residential Care

Tasks are readily available and supervisors are used to signing off. The risk is anonymity โ€” care charts, name boards and room numbers are everywhere, and they end up in photographs nobody checked.

๐Ÿงธ Preschools and Childcare Settings

Planned activities make natural demonstration tasks, and the evaluation afterwards is where the band is decided. Consent is stricter here than anywhere: children must not be identifiable in any evidence.

๐Ÿซ Schools and Special Classes

Role boundaries are the thing assessors watch. Working under direction has to be visible in your account, and a small class means one detail can identify a pupil even with no name attached.

๐Ÿข Offices, Retail and Placements

Meetings, presentations and supervisory moments are the usual task types. The difficulty is arranging observation at all, since workplace supervisors here are less familiar with QQI paperwork.

๐Ÿ’ป Self-Recorded at Home

No audience nerves, and a completely different set of rules instead. Check length, editing and audience requirements in week two โ€” not on the evening you plan to submit.

Common Questions

Straight Answers on QQI Skills Demonstrations

Taken from our inbox and from what learners ask in the fortnight before a demonstration date.

QQI defines it as an assessment of practical learning outcomes in which you complete a task, or a series of tasks, that demonstrate a range of skills. In practice it usually comes with a written plan beforehand and a written account afterwards, both of which are assessed alongside the task itself. Weightings run from around 40% to 60% depending on your component.
Start with the outcomes rather than the task. List every outcome the demonstration has to evidence, then choose tasks that cover them without overlapping โ€” that single step prevents the commonest failure on this technique. After that: write the plan properly, confirm who completes any observer report, check the recording rules if it is self-recorded, and make notes the same day you perform.
Sometimes, but not on demand. A referral usually means your provider has to schedule another observation, which depends on assessor availability, your placement still being open and where you are in the academic year. That is why this technique rewards preparation more than any other โ€” the cost of getting it wrong is measured in weeks, not in a rewrite.
A brief check before your date is โ‚ฌ25. A plan or script is โ‚ฌ29, a written account โ‚ฌ39, and full demonstration evidence โ‚ฌ59. A demonstration with a second element starts at โ‚ฌ95 and a referral re-check is โ‚ฌ25. You get a firm figure before committing.
Your brief sets the length, and it varies widely. What does not vary is what earns the marks: the reason behind each choice, the moment something changed, and what you would do differently. We regularly see short accounts score above long ones, because length without reasoning evidences nothing.
Raise it with them before you submit, politely and early. Usually nobody has been dishonest โ€” the two documents were written weeks apart and remembered differently. Assessors read both together, so an unexplained mismatch damages the credibility of each. Read their report before you finalise your own account, not afterwards.
Your provider's rules first, because they differ: length, whether editing is permitted, whether an audience must be visible and what file format is accepted. Then the room โ€” anything in shot becomes permanent evidence, including whiteboards, charts, door signs and people passing behind you. Record early enough that a second attempt is possible.
No โ€” we review and give feedback on your draft. Your work is measured against the criteria, sources are verified and every fix is named. You make the edits. On this technique it could not be otherwise: only you were in the room, and an assessor who watched you perform will notice immediately if the account does not sound like the person they observed.
Yes, and it should โ€” that is how a well-chosen task earns its place. The problem is the reverse: several tasks all evidencing the same outcome while another has nothing. Map before you choose, and a set of three or four tasks can cover far more ground than most learners manage with the same effort.
Initials or role titles in writing, and a physical check of the space for anything recorded or photographed. Care charts, name boards, rosters, wall displays and door signs all identify people. Get consent where your setting requires it. This matters more here than on any written technique, because a recording cannot be quietly amended later.
Usually three people. An internal assessor marks it, an internal verifier samples and checks the marking is consistent, and an external authenticator appointed by your provider samples again. Any observer report sits alongside your own account for all three of them, which is why the two need to agree.
Having a draft read and criticised is ordinary academic practice โ€” it is what a writing centre does. Because you make every change, the work stays yours. Provider rules on external feedback do differ though, so check your own institution's policy before ordering. If yours restricts it, please do not order.
Less than you would expect for a practical task, and more for a presentation-style one. Either way the criteria list structure, evidence and reasoning rather than fluency โ€” a clearly structured account in plain language regularly scores above an eloquent vague one. Ask your provider early about reasonable accommodation if you think you need it.
Not at all, and a week is more useful than most learners think. Coverage gaps can still be closed by swapping one task, the plan can still be written properly, and the recording rules can still be checked. Tell us the date when you send and it goes ahead of everything else in the queue.
